Frequently Asked Questions

SETTING UP THE SYSTEM

Your activation code will be included in your product package. If it is missing, please contact customer service at help@firealert.com

See the links to the app on the website: getfirealert.com
Download it for no charge like other apps at the Apple Store or Google Play. Search for “Fire Alert App

Simply follow the instructions in the app. You can do it yourself in minutes

No special tools are required. You may need a common household screwdriver and/or a ladder.

The system and sensors are for interior use only. Exterior use is not allowed and will result in the cancellation of service. See the instructions included with your package for suggestions on where to place them inside your home.

“Gateway” – Select a location that is within four (4) feet of your internet router (because that is how long the Ethernet cable is that connects to your router, and close enough to an electrical outlet to plug it in.

“Smoke/CO audio sensor” – Select a location within 6 inches of one of your existing, interconnected Smoke and/or CO detectors. If your existing Smoke/CO detectors are not interconnected place a Smoke/CO audio device within 6 inches of smoke and/or CO detector you want to have monitored. To figure out if your smoke detectors are interconnected simply test one of them (usually each smoke detector will have a test button to press) and they should all make a beep sound. If they don’t all make a beep sound then either your smoke detectors are not interconnected or you they are malfunctioning. If you suspect that they are malfunctioning you may want to have an expert check them out before using Fire Alert with them.
-“Water/Freeze Sensor” – Place the sensor/s in any areas where you might expect a water leak to exist or where pipes may freeze during winter weather i.e. under sinks, dishwashers, water heaters, washing machines, etc

The Fire Alert System is designed to work in single-family dwellings, apartments, condos, mobile homes, etc. In order to work properly the installation location must have:

  1. Active internet service and an available port on the internet router
  2. An AC power outlet close to the internet router location
  3. Apple IOS or Android Smartphone for operating the App
  4. If you are installing the Smoke/CO audio device your home must have at least one existing and operable Smoke/CO detector.

The system is designed to work with almost any home router with typical settings and an available internet port. However, a router may not be compatible with the system if the router has extensive custom settings. In this case, the Router Administrator should first open the ports and verify all three LEDs on the Gateway are ON.

Router.snet.net.au UDP/1234
Cloud.securenettech.com UDP/1234
50.58.195.224 TCP/9999

Most cities do not require a permit for the system. However, it is your responsibility to contact your individual city to determine alarm permit requirements. When contacting your local city government please make it clear that you are NOT installing a “burglar” or “Security” alarm system – but you are only installing a system to alert if you have a fire, CO, water leak, or low temperature emergency.

Your activation code will be included in your product package. If it is missing, please contact customer service at help@firealert.com

GATEWAY QUESTIONS

The “Gateway” is the communications hub for your Fire Alert system. The Gateway receives alarm signals wirelessly from each of the sensors and transmits the signals over the internet to you via text message. If you have opted to have your system professionally monitored the Gateway also sends the alarm messages to a central monitoring facility

You will see a red, green, and yellow LED light on the top, front of the Gateway housing.

You will receive a text message on your app indicating “low battery“.

Disconnect the Gateway from AC power
Depress the small oval tab on the back of the Gateway housing and gently separate the top and bottom portions of the Gateway housing. Replace with AAA batteries.

SMOKE/CO AUDIO SENSOR

The Smoke/CO sensor is designed to work with UL listed smoke, CO, or combination Smoke/CO alarm sensors. Most Smoke and/or CO alarm sensors used in the past 20 years should be UL listed and compatible with the Fire Alert system.

A quick check for Smoke alarm compatibility is to confirm that the sensor’s alarm tone is three (3) beeps, repeating every five seconds. Verify by pressing the test button on the smoke alarm

A quick check for CO alarm compatibility is to confirm that the sensor’s alarm tone is -four (4) beeps, repeating every five seconds. Verify by pressing the test button on the CO alarm.

The Audio sensor “listens for the alarm sounds made by your existing smoke and/or CO detectors. In essence, you could think of it as a “detector of smoke detectors beeps.” When the Audio sensor hears the alarm tones from your existing Smoke/CO detector it transmits an “alarm message” through your Gateway which in turns transmits the alarm message to your smart phone, PC, Tablet, etc., and if your system is monitored, to our central monitoring facility who then contacts the appropriate emergency response authority.

IMPORTANT: IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU DETERMINE IF YOUR EXISTING SMOKE AND/OR CO DETECTORS ARE “INTERCONNECTED.” “INTERCONNECTED” MEANS THAT IF ONE OF YOUR DETECTORS SOUNDS AN ALARM, ALL OTHER DETECTORS WILL SOUND AN ALARM THROUGHOUT THE PREMISES. IF YOUR DETECTORS ARE NOT INTERCONNECTED A DETECTOR IN ONE LOCATION MAY SOUND AN ALARM IN THAT LOCATION BUT OTHER DETECTORS WILL NOT SOUND AN ALARM.

Use your normal testing procedure (generally there is a “test” button on your sensor). If your Smoke and/or CO alarms are “interconnected,” all will sound an alarm tone when you initiate the test procedure on any individual sensor. If all of your Smoke and/or CO alarms do not sound when tested, either your alarms are not interconnected or you may have inoperative alarms that should be replaced.

If you have verified that all existing Smoke and/or CO detectors are interconnected and operable, only one Audio sensor is necessary. If your existing Smoke and/or CO detectors are not interconnected it is highly recommended that an audio sensor be placed next to each existing Smoke and/or CO detector.

Gently depress the tab on the top of the Audio sensor and separate the top and bottom sections of the sensor housing. Remove the existing battery and replace.

WATER/FREEZE SENSOR

The Water Leak/Freeze sensor is designed to detect water across any two of the four gold probes on the bottom of the sensor and will alert immediately when water is detected. The sensor will send a “restoral” when water is no longer detected.

The Freeze sensor is slower acting and will initiate an alarm when the temperature falls below 41degrees F / 5degrees C. The sensor will send a restoral when the temperature rises above 45degrees F / 7degrees C.

For water leak detection place the sensor in areas that are most likely to be effected by leaking water i.e., under sinks, washing machines, water heaters, dishwashers, behind toilets, under ice maker connections, etc.

For freeze detection place the sensor in areas inside the home that would be damaged by freezing pipes, i.e. under sinks on exterior walls.

Water leak/Freeze sensors should not be placed outdoors or in refrigerated areas. This will be considered a prohibited used and will result in cancellation of service or extra charges.

Water Leak Test – Put the system in “Test” mode using the mobile app. Select “Test” in the app’s main menu and follow the instructions.

Initiate the test by placing the sensor in water or by placing a wet finger across at least two of the gold probes on the bottom of the sensor for several seconds. Upon detecting water the sensor will display a red LED light that will glow faintly under the sensor cover indicating an alert is being transmitted to the system Gateway. After twenty (20) seconds select “History” from the app menu. If water was detected a “Water Leak Detected” message will be exhibited in History. In the event a “Water Leak Detected” message is exhibited in History, repeat the test procedure. If the test is again unsuccessful you should notify customer service.

Freeze Test – Place the sensor in an environment with temperature below 40degrees F, i.e, refrigerator freezer. Although the sensor may initiate a freeze alarm in as little as ten (10) minutes, please allow at least 30 minutes for an alarm to initiated.

The sensor includes a long-life battery that should not need to be replaced for approximately five (5) years under normal operating conditions. When the battery is low it will send a “low battery” signal to the Gateway and you will receive a text notification. -To replace the battery follow these steps:

  1. Carefully remove the white, rubber feet on the bottom of the sensor
  2. Remove the three (3) screws and open the case
  3. Replace battery with a Panasonic CR2450 Lithium Battery
  4. Replace the feet, screws, and replace sensor to the appropriate location.
